935 Case of Bad Breath in a Child

Abstract 4-year-old girl with a two-year history of speech and language delay was referred to the Speech Language Therapy Service by her health visitor. Additionally, she had asthma, recurrent glue ears, head lice, poor dentition, persistent malodorous nasal discharge, halitosis. Her hyper-nasal sounds indicated soft palate dysfunction. Subsequent assessment in cleft clinic resulted diagnosis non-cleft velopharyngeal insufficiency. At time elective pharyngoplasty, anaesthetist surgeon were overwhelmed foul smell emanating from nose mouth. As such, an intraoperative endoscopy undertaken examine vestibules. A calcified cigarette filter (Figure 1) found impacted deep within patient's right nostril removed prior pharyngoplasty. It later discovered that discharge halitosis plagued child since age 18 months. Moreover, undergone number clinical assessments primary care setting. However, combination smell, uncooperative demeanour made examination difficult, symptoms inappropriately attributed tooth decay periodontal disease.
